SOUTHLAND HARMONY CHORUS

The chorus was actually chartered with Sweet Adelines International under the name of "Downey Chorus" on January 7, 1985 with 27 members under the direction of Alice DeLaura. The chorus has competed at each yearly competition since its inception. Our first award was as "Most Improved Chorus" in 1989 under Alice's direction. Bobbie Dollins became our new musical director in December of 1990.

We earned the "Most Improved Chorus" award for two consecutive years, received Fourth Place Honorable Mention in 1992 and 1993, Third Place Medalist in 1995, Fifth Place in 1996, and Sixth Place in 1997. Sandy Sharpe, now living in Arkansas and a member of the Top of the Rock Chorus, took up the directorship after the untimely death of Bobbie. She lead us for two years until we found Theresa Carey. Theresa was with us for five years until her obligations to a new husband and her quartet caused her to step down. Stan Sharpe became our new director, staying with us for about 5 years. We learned a lot about the fine art of singing well under his direction.

He decided to retire, and we wish him the best.

Then, along came Jim Campbell, who we absolutely adore, as our newest director. We have a fresh outlook on our songs, and are learning some new ones that will expand our repetoire. We are proud to be Jim's Gems!
